Bridging the Gap in Physical Education
Students returning to school in the Fall will bring unprecedented challenges to physical education teachers. Isolation, quarantines, virtual learning, and screen time have all contributed to a lack of physical activity across all grade levels. These barriers have created a regression in body control, skill development, and personal fitness levels that physical educators will need to overcome. In this session, Daniel Hill OPEN National Trainer will share a variety of new K-12 outcomes-based lessons from OPEN that will help physical educators bridge the gaps created by life during the pandemic.

Aim Higher with Missouri National Archery in the Schools Program (MoNASP)
Aim Higher with Missouri National Archery in the Schools Program (MoNASP)

Are you looking for an activity that students in your Physical Education class can participate in no matter their skill level or age?

The Missouri National Archery in the Schools Program (MoNASP) allows students from 4th grade to 12th grade, to participate in archery to help build stronger, more confident, and accomplished students both inside and outside of the classroom. MoNASP is coordinated through the Missouri Department of Conservation.

The MoNASP program teaches students a basic step-by-step method to be successful on the archery range. Success is not dependent on age, size, or skill ability to have a student find they are successful with the program. There are more than 85,000 Missouri students who participate in the MoNASP program.

This is a hands-on presentation that will cover the basic step by step archery techniques for all students, including adaptive techniques for students with disabilities. An archery shooting demonstration will be given, and equipment will be available for educators to use during this session. Information will be provided on how to bring this program to your school free of charge. MoNASP provides maintenance grants and a rebate for equipment purchases. A Basic Archery Instructor (BAI) training class is offered for educators around the state throughout the year and can be offered as professional development days.

Archery is a great physical activity that provides positive aspects for all students. It provides a sense of confidence, accomplishment, and joy in knowing they are able to successfully participate in MoNASP. Missouri students may also participate in state and national archery competitions.

Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Education
Nationally, approximately one in four girls and one in 13 boys experience sexual abuse at some point in childhood (CDC, 2020a). In Missouri, there were 5,225 substantiated cases of child abuse and/or neglect in Fiscal Year 2019, 34 percent of which were cases of sexual abuse Missouri Children’s Division, 2020). Additionally, in 2019 Missouri Child Advocacy Centers served over 9,000 children, 6,050 of whom reported sexual abuse (National Children’s Alliance, 2020).
Unfortunately, these statistics tell us that whether you work with youth, are raising your children, or simply a member of a community, it is probable that someone you know and care for has experienced child sexual abuse.

In 2019, the Missouri State Legislature passed a requirement for school districts to provide “trauma-informed, developmentally appropriate sexual abuse training to students in all grades not lower than sixth grade” in the school year 2020- 21 and in each school year thereafter. To successfully implement this requirement, school districts need to bring together a variety of stakeholders- health and physical education educators are key players in this process.

If your district is trying to assess how to meet this mandate, this session will provide guidance on how to assess your current curriculum/practices to evaluate where your district may already be meeting the mandate. For areas where the standard is not being met, resources and referrals to community organizations who can support your district’s child sexual abuse prevention work will be provided. Developing and implementing child sexual abuse prevention education can only be achieved through a collaborative effort. Participating in this session will provide you with the information, tools and resources needed to bring a team together in your district to implement trauma informed child sexual abuse prevention training.
